FarFrom

Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

FarFrom is a platform that connects travellers with hosts who offer volunteering experiences with accommodation, for help with tasks like gardening, DIY, animal care, and more. It's a great way to travel, learn new skills, and experience local cultures without spending money on accommodation.

FarFrom allows you to create a profile as a traveller or host. As a traveller, you can search for placements based on the kind of help you would like to offer and the location you want to visit. Hosts list tasks they need help with and information about their accommodation/ meals provided. Simply apply to placements, communicate with hosts, and arrange the details!

The help varies based on what the host needs help with. Common tasks include gardening, house painting, animal care, cleaning, helping with home renovations, eco-projects, and sometimes even assisting with the host's business. Each listing will specify the type of help that the host is looking for.

Yes, as a traveller, you can browse listings by location, accommodation type and the type of help you want to offer. Whether you're looking for a farm stay, helping with renovations, or supporting environmental initiatives, FarFrom allows you to choose placements that match your interests and travel plans.

Right now, exchanges are in the UK. However, hosts in Australia and New Zealand are joining now, with their listings going live before the end of 2026. If you're a host in another country, you can sign up today and we'll add you to the waitlist for your country.

Either party can end a placement early if things aren't working out or if unforeseen circumstances arise which means you need to end the exchange early. We'd encourage both parties to communicate directly first, and to contact us at hello@farfromtravel.com if support is needed.

Yes, volunteers and hosts can message through our site before booking. This helps to answer any questions or confirm any details that are important to know before you book with each other.

FarFrom takes safety seriously and encourages clear communication between travellers and hosts. We recommend that both parties have an initial conversation, perhaps via video chat, to get to know each other before committing. Always trust your instincts and don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any concerns.

Host FAQs

Free hosting is available to charities, Community Interest Companies (CICs) and community groups, at FarFrom's discretion. To apply, fill in our charity application form. We'll review your organisation and let you know within 48 hours whether you're eligible for a free host account. Not sure whether your organisation qualifies? Get in touch with us and we'll let you know.

FarFrom is a platform that helps hosts find volunteers looking to exchange their time and skills and have an immersive voluntary experience. As a host, you can list what help you need and what kind of experience you're offering. Travellers apply through the site, and you choose who to welcome based on what suits your needs.

Volunteers can help with everyday tasks around your property, such as gardening, caring for animals, small DIY jobs, light housekeeping, eco projects and digital support. Keep it to a few hours a day, so they have plenty of time to explore. Volunteers are there to lend a hand, not to replace paid staff, so please don't ask them to cover roles you'd normally employ someone for. Avoid anything that needs a qualification, licence or specialist training, or that could be dangerous, such as working at height, using heavy machinery or handling chemicals. Set out what's involved in your listing so volunteers know what to expect before they apply.

You don't have to provide meals, it's all up to you. However, it's a nice gesture and often appreciated by travellers. Some hosts offer shared meals, others provide basic ingredients, and some simply give access to a kitchen. Just be clear in your listing about what's included so everyone knows what to expect.

Hosts that are upfront about the experience they're offering to volunteers is the ultimate way to ensure you have the best experience as the volunteers know what to expect, and they arrive already ready for the experience ahead.

FarFrom doesn't provide insurance for placements at this time, but we're in discussions with insurance providers to be able to deliver this through our platform. We recommend you contact your existing home, property, or business insurer, and let them know you'll be hosting volunteers. Some policies will cover this automatically; others may not. You're responsible for ensuring your insurance is appropriate for the activities volunteers will be involved in.

Yes. Their profile will include information about who they are, their skills and travel experience, and where they are from. If there is anything missing from the profile that will help your decision, just send the volunteer a message through the platform. You're never obligated to accept anyone.

Light hand tools are generally fine where there's a clear and safe task involved, such as gardening tools and basic maintenance equipment. Volunteers must not operate heavy machinery, hazardous equipment, or power tools that require training or professional qualifications. If you're unsure about a specific task, don't include it.

You control your availability through your listing. This makes FarFrom suitable for seasonal arrangements, if you only want volunteers during spring or summer, or around a specific project, that's completely fine. Just make sure your listing reflects your availability accurately so volunteers aren't applying for dates you can't offer.

Every listing on FarFrom must offer private accommodation — that means a private sleeping space and access to a bathroom. Shared bedrooms (with your household or volunteers who they have never met before) are not eligible. There is also an option for you to give space for campervans to pitch up on your site, and share your facilities like kitchen and bathroom. Beyond that, accommodation needs to be safe, habitable, and honestly represented in your listing.

Yes, your listing is yours to set up and manage. You choose how to describe your property, what tasks you're offering, what accommodation is available, and your availability. We ask that everything is honest and accurate.

You can view each volunteer's profile, experience and skills, along with reviews from hosts they've stayed with before. If anything is missing, message them through the platform. We also recommend a video call before you accept, to make sure it's a good fit on both sides.

We encourage clear communication from the start, including written agreements on what's expected. If something isn't working out, you can end the placement early. We have help guides and a support team to help resolve issues where possible.

Yes, you can! Many hosts welcome more than one volunteer at a time, and it can be a great way to get more help and create a fun, social atmosphere. Just make sure you have enough space and resources to host them comfortably, and be clear in your listing about how many people you can accommodate.

If a volunteer contacts you directly via email, social media, or any other channel, we'd ask you to redirect them to apply through FarFrom. All placements need to go through the platform to ensure both parties are protected. We can't assist with bookings made outside FarFrom, and this will leave both you and the volunteer without the safeguards that come with a confirmed booking. You also won't be able to leave a review for the volunteer or receive one yourself without a booking confirmed through the platform. If you're unsure how someone found your contact details, feel free to get in touch with us.

Send them a booking request yourself. From your message thread you can invite the volunteer to book the dates you've agreed, and as soon as they accept and pay, the booking is confirmed. Until a booking is confirmed, the dates aren't secured, either of you can change plans without notice, and neither of you will be able to leave a review.

Yes. Volunteers pay FarFrom a one-off booking fee per stay which is paid to FarFrom, not to you, and covers host vetting, platform support and running the site. Take a look at our volunteer pricing page for more details.

Only when you accept. When a volunteer sends a booking request, their card is authorised but no money is taken. The fee is charged at the moment you accept, and the booking is confirmed straight away. If you decline, they aren't charged.

7 days. After that the request expires automatically, the volunteer isn't charged, and they'd need to send a new request. Please respond either way, as volunteers are often planning travel around your answer.

Yes. If you've agreed dates in messages, you can send the volunteer a booking request for those dates. They have 7 days to accept. When they accept and pay, the booking is confirmed immediately with no further approval needed from you. If they choose different dates, it comes back to you as a normal request to approve.

You can cancel from your bookings page any time. The volunteer gets a full refund of their booking fee, however close it is to the start date. Please give as much notice as you can, as they may already have booked travel.

You'll be notified by email, and the dates are yours to offer to someone else. Any refund is between the volunteer and FarFrom, so there's nothing for you to do.

Not directly at the moment. If you and your volunteer agree new dates, get in touch with us at hello@farfromtravel.com and we'll help.

Volunteer FAQs

Tasks vary depending on the host, but can include gardening, painting, helping with animals, general maintenance, housekeeping, or even creative projects. You'll see a description in each listing, and you can ask questions before you commit.

Once you've found a placement you're interested in, you can contact the host directly through the FarFrom platform. Make sure to ask any questions you may have about the tasks, accommodation, or other details before confirming your booking.

Sometimes! Some hosts provide meals or groceries, others just offer access to a kitchen. It varies, so always check the listing carefully and feel free to ask questions before confirming.

Many hosts are open to couples or friends applying together, especially if there's enough space and tasks to share. Just make sure to mention this when you message the host, and look for listings that say they accept more than one traveller.

Each host sets their own. The host's listing will tell you what the host is looking for. If you need some flexibility, message the host before you book.

It depends on where you're from and where you're going. Visa rules differ from country to country, and some countries treat volunteering in exchange for accommodation as work, even though it's unpaid. Before you book, check the official government immigration website for the country you're visiting to make sure your visa allows you to volunteer. If you're unsure, contact that country's immigration authority or embassy. FarFrom and our hosts can't give visa advice or sponsor visas, and it's your responsibility to have the right visa for your stay.

Each host sets their own expectations and it's always flexible. Most hosts ask for around 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. You'll always get time off to explore and relax. Check each listing for the exact details before applying.

Every host has a profile and a listing with details and photos of the property, and you can read reviews from volunteers who have stayed with them. If a host is new and doesn't have reviews yet, ask plenty of questions and arrange a video call before you book. If anything doesn't feel right, get in touch with us.

Travelling always carries a bit of unpredictability. If something isn't right, speak to your host first, most issues can be solved with good communication. If not, you're free to leave the placement, though we ask everyone to act respectfully and responsibly.

Most placements go ahead as planned, but sometimes something unexpected comes up and a host needs to cancel. If that happens, you'll get a full refund of your booking fee, however close it is to your start date. We'll also do our best to help you find another placement, though we can't guarantee an immediate replacement. Hosts aren't responsible for finding you alternative accommodation, so we recommend keeping some backup funds or a flexible plan in case things change at the last minute.

While each host might provide different details, it's important to bring essentials like your personal hygiene items, clothing suited for the tasks you'll be doing (like sturdy shoes or gardening gloves), and any specific items requested by the host.

You can cancel from your trips page. If your host hasn't accepted yet, you won't be charged. If your booking is confirmed, cancel 7 or more days before your start date and we'll refund your booking fee in full. Cancellations 6 days or fewer before the start date aren't refunded. Whatever the timing, please give your host as much notice as you can, as they'll be relying on your help. See our cancellation policy for the full details.

While experience in certain areas (like gardening or animal care) may be helpful, it's not usually required. Hosts often appreciate enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn. Be sure to read the listing to understand any skills or experience the host is looking for.

Yes. FarFrom doesn't provide insurance for volunteers, but we're working on it! You're responsible for any insurance you think is appropriate for your trip — whether that's travel insurance, health cover, or personal liability. We'd strongly recommend taking out travel insurance before any placement, just as you would for any other trip.

The booking fee is a one-off payment and is paid to FarFrom, not to the host. You are only charged once your host accepts your booking. It covers host vetting, platform support, and the running of the site. Your accommodation is provided by the host as part of the exchange. One fee covers your entire stay.

One booking fee per stay depending on whether you are travelling with a companion. It's the same whether you stay five days or several weeks, and it's the only fee we charge. Accommodation is provided by your host as part of the exchange. Take a look at our volunteer pricing page for more details.

Only when your host accepts. When you send a booking request your card is authorised, but no money is taken. If the host accepts, the fee is charged and your stay is confirmed. If they decline, or don't respond within 7 days, you are not charged.

That's the authorisation, a temporary hold your bank places on the amount. It isn't a charge. It becomes a payment only if the host accepts, and it's released if they decline, if the request expires, or if you withdraw it. Depending on your bank, the hold can take a few days to disappear.

7 days. If they haven't responded by then, the request expires automatically and you're free to apply elsewhere.

Yes. If the host hasn't accepted yet, you can cancel the request from your trips page and you won't be charged.

Cancel 7 or more days before your start date and we'll refund the booking fee in full. Cancellations 6 days or fewer before the start date are not refunded. See our cancellation policy for the full details.

The host is inviting you to stay on specific dates. If you accept, you pay the booking fee and your stay is confirmed immediately. If you'd prefer different dates, you can change them and the host will need to approve the new request. Host requests expire after 7 days.

Not directly at the moment. Speak to your host first, then contact us at hello@farfromtravel.com and we'll help.

This depends on the host. Some properties are set up to accommodate volunteers who bring their own transport and accommodation, particularly larger rural sites or glamping properties with suitable land. It's worth asking the host directly before applying. The listing will usually indicate if this is possible.

Hosts will see your volunteer profile once you apply, this includes the information you've provided about yourself, your experience, availability, and what you're looking for from a placement. Your full contact details are not shared until a placement is confirmed.

Yes. You need to be 18 or older to volunteer with a FarFrom host.

Create a free volunteer account, browse the listings, and send a booking request to the hosts you'd like to stay with. Stays range from a few days to a couple of months, depending on the host.

FarFrom is based on a non-monetary exchange. We are a platform to help people exchange their skills for accommodation, we are not an employment website. You offer your time and help in return for a place to stay, and sometimes meals or other perks. It's not a paid job, and shouldn't replace professional employment. There are no obligations of productivity and no pay.
